| 1. Prerequisites |
: |
none |
| 2. Contents |
: |
Mechanics: Units, physical quantities, vectors, motion along a straight line, motion in two or three dimensions, Newton's laws of motion, work and kinetic energy, potential energy, momentum, impulse and collisions, rotation of rigid bodies, dynamics of rotational motion, elasticity, gravitation, periodic motion, fluid mechanics. Waves and Acoustics: mechanical waves, sound and hearing. Thermodynamics: temperature and heat, thermal properties of matter, the first and second law of thermodynamics. |
| 3. Objectives |
: |
To introduce the concept of vectors, physical quantities, and mechanics.
|
| 4. Textbook/ Lecture notes |
: |
Young and Freedman: “University Physics”. Volume 1, Pearson Education, 2008.
Note: For electronics engineers the volumes 1, 2 and 3 are recommended, whereas for computer engineers only volumes 1 and 2 are of interest.
|
| 5. Attendance |
: |
Compulsory attendance for theory lectures is 70% and for lab lectures 80%. |
| 6. Grading |
: |
Midterm 40% Final 60% |
| 7. Academic dishonesty |
: |
Academic dishonesty is related to cheating and plagiarism. Copying in whole or in part others’ assignments, lab works or exams, is considered cheating respectively plagiarism. All parties involved will receive a zero score for the lab, assignment or the exam. |
